Transdisciplinary Learning in the PYP: Why Most Schools Get the Six Themes Wrong Before They're Even Authorized

What are the PYP transdisciplinary themes?

They are the six organizing ideas, Who We Are, Where We Are in Place and Time, How We Express Ourselves, How the World Works, How We Organize Ourselves, and Sharing the Planet, that the IB requires every Primary Years Programme school to use as the architecture for its Programme of Inquiry. Each theme generates one unit of inquiry per grade level every year, four units in the early years with at least two drawn from Who We Are and How We Express Ourselves, and the entire arrangement exists to let students build knowledge across, between, and beyond conventional subject boundaries rather than inside them. That definition sounds simple enough to write on a candidacy application in an afternoon. Building a Programme of Inquiry that actually honors it, the kind that survives a verification visit and that teachers can sustain five years into authorization, is a different undertaking entirely, and it is the one place where well-intentioned candidate schools most often mistake structural compliance for genuine transdisciplinary practice.

We have sat with curriculum coordinators who could recite the six themes from memory and still produce a POI that an evaluator would read as six separate subject units wearing a shared label. The gap between those two things, reciting the framework and living inside it, is where authorization timelines stretch, where verification visits surface uncomfortable findings, and where schools that thought they were ready discover they were not. This piece exists to close that gap before it costs you a candidacy cycle.

The Difference Between Transdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary, and Why Evaluators Can Tell

Start with the distinction that causes the most confusion among teaching staff encountering inquiry-based practice for the first time, particularly staff arriving from a heavily subject-siloed national curriculum. A multidisciplinary unit picks a topic, say the Indus Valley Civilization, and then assigns each subject its own task underneath that topic: counting using the Indus script's number system in mathematics, reading a passage about Mohenjo-daro in language arts, or building a model granary or seal in art. The subjects remain entirely separate from one another. They share a label, nothing more. A transdisciplinary unit works in the opposite direction. It begins with a conceptual central idea, something with genuine intellectual weight and relevance beyond the classroom, and then asks students to draw on whichever disciplines the inquiry actually requires to investigate it. The disciplines stop being the organizing structure and become tools in service of a bigger question.

Consider a Sharing the Planet unit built around water scarcity. In a multidisciplinary version, students might calculate water usage statistics in math class, read an article about drought in literacy, and draw a poster in art, three disconnected activities loosely tied to a theme. In a genuinely transdisciplinary version, the central idea concerns how communities make difficult choices when a shared resource becomes scarce. Students analyze the school's own water-use data, which requires real mathematical reasoning about averages and trends. They test filtration methods, which require scientific methods and observation. They draft a proposal to present to school leadership, which requires persuasive writing grounded in evidence. None of these activities is happening because a subject needs its turn in the unit. Each is happening because the inquiry itself demanded it. That is the structural test a verification team is implicitly applying when they read your unit planners and sit in your classrooms, and it is the test that separates a transdisciplinary curriculum from a well-organized subject curriculum with a thematic veneer.

This matters for authorization specifically because the Programme Standards and Practices ask schools to demonstrate that their programme of inquiry allows for a balanced inclusion of subject areas while still functioning as a genuinely transdisciplinary structure, not a subject curriculum with a different table of contents. Schools moving from a heavily departmentalized primary structure, which describes a significant share of candidate schools transitioning from a national board curriculum, tend to default toward the multidisciplinary version because it is more comfortable for teachers trained to think in subject blocks. The documentation can look identical to genuine transdisciplinary planning at a glance. An experienced evaluator sitting in a classroom for twenty minutes will see the difference immediately, because in a multidisciplinary classroom the teacher is delivering content, and in a transdisciplinary classroom the students are pursuing a question the teacher has helped them frame.

Building a Programme of Inquiry That Actually Holds Together

The Programme of Inquiry is the whole-school grid that maps all six transdisciplinary themes against every grade level, showing which unit of inquiry sits where, when it runs, and how it connects vertically to what came before and what follows. Every PYP candidate school must produce one, and producing a defensible one is harder than it looks because a POI is not simply a scheduling document. It needs to demonstrate horizontal articulation, meaning that within a single grade level, the six units together cover the full breadth the framework expects without unnecessary duplication. It also needs to demonstrate vertical articulation, meaning that a Where We Are in Place and Time unit in grade two and the same theme's unit in grade four build on each other in genuine conceptual progression rather than repeating the same content at a slightly higher reading level.

This is where collaborative planning, the practice we discussed at length in our piece on the PYP trial year, becomes inseparable from the transdisciplinary themes themselves. A POI cannot be built by a single curriculum coordinator working alone at a desk, however capable that coordinator is. It has to emerge from teachers across grade levels sitting together, mapping what each unit actually demands of students, and checking that no theme is quietly becoming a dumping ground for whatever content did not fit elsewhere. We have reviewed candidate-school POI documents where Sharing the Planet appeared five times across five grade levels with almost identical central ideas about recycling, simply because no one had stepped back to ask whether the theme's units, taken together across the school, actually built toward increasingly sophisticated understanding. That is a horizontal and vertical articulation failure, and it is exactly the kind of pattern a verification team is trained to notice when they review POI documentation alongside actual unit planners.

The practical mechanism for avoiding this is what experienced PYP coordinators call matrix mapping: laying out every grade level against all six themes in a single grid, then populating it not with topics but with the central idea each unit will pursue, the key concepts it will draw on, and the disciplinary knowledge each teacher is responsible for delivering explicitly within that inquiry. This last point deserves emphasis because it is frequently misunderstood. Transdisciplinary framing does not mean abandoning explicit subject teaching. A strong unit of inquiry still requires a teacher to directly teach the mathematics, the vocabulary, and the scientific procedure the inquiry depends on. The theme provides the coherence and the authentic context; it does not replace direct instruction in disciplinary content. Schools that interpret transdisciplinary learning as license to let curriculum coverage drift, on the theory that genuine inquiry should be entirely student-led without explicit teaching, tend to produce units that feel engaging but leave real gaps in foundational skills, gaps that show up later as learning support concerns or, in jurisdictions with parallel national curriculum obligations, as compliance problems with local inspection frameworks.

What Changes in September 2027, and Why Schools Should Not Wait to Adjust

Here is a detail that surprisingly few candidate schools currently in the pipeline have fully absorbed and one that has direct planning consequences. The IB has revised the descriptors attached to each of the six transdisciplinary themes, moving the framing from what the previous version called commonalities of human experience toward a more deliberate balance between human and natural worlds. The themes themselves have not changed in name or number. What has changed is the scope each theme is meant to cover. Who We Are, for instance, previously centered almost entirely on human identity, relationships, and rights. Under the revised descriptor, the theme extends to encompass other species and humanity's relationship with the broader environment, which opens space for units that previous POI structures would not have accommodated under that theme.

Schools may begin using the updated descriptors immediately, and the IB has set a hard deadline of September 2027, after which every authorized PYP school must be operating under the revised framework. For a school currently in consideration or early candidacy, this is not a distant compliance date to file away for later. It is a planning variable that belongs in the POI from the outset, because building a Programme of Inquiry now under the old descriptors only to rebuild significant portions of it before 2027 wastes the very collaborative planning capital that takes a trial year to develop. We advise every candidate school we work with to build their initial POI directly against the revised descriptors, even where older training materials, workshop notes, or PD resources a coordinator encountered earlier in their career still reference the previous framing. A verification team reviewing a POI in 2027 or anywhere close to it will be reading it against the current standard, not the one a coordinator may have learned under five years ago.

The Concepts and Lines of Inquiry That Make a Unit Defensible

Beneath each unit of inquiry sits a structure of central idea, key concepts, and lines of inquiry, and the quality of this substructure is frequently what separates a unit that reads as genuinely transdisciplinary from one that merely claims to be. The central idea is the conceptual lens for the entire unit, a single statement substantial enough to sustain weeks of genuine inquiry without exhausting itself after the first lesson. Lines of inquiry narrow that central idea into the specific angles students will actually investigate, and key concepts, drawn from the IB's defined set such as form, function, causation, change, connection, perspective, responsibility, and reflection, give students the intellectual tools to think about the central idea at a level that transcends any single subject.

A weak central idea tends to be either too narrow, effectively restating a single subject's content under different language, or so broad that it could apply to almost any topic and therefore provides no real direction for planning. "Plants need water to grow" is biology content stated as a sentence, not a transdisciplinary central idea. "Living things adapt their behavior in response to changes in their environment" gives students a conceptual lens broad enough to draw on science, social studies, and even language arts as they examine how individuals, communities, or organisms respond to change while still being specific enough to generate concrete lines of inquiry a teaching team can actually plan units of work around. The discipline of writing strong central ideas is one of the most teachable skills in PYP coordinator training, and it is also one of the most common areas where self-study documentation looks polished while the underlying thinking has not yet matured, because central ideas can be edited for elegant phrasing without the unit beneath them actually changing in substance.

Take a How We Organize Ourselves unit as a second working example, since this theme is particularly prone to drifting into civics-as-content rather than genuine inquiry. A grade three team might land on the central idea that communities create systems to function fairly and efficiently. From there, three lines of inquiry could narrow the scope: how rules and roles emerge within a group, how systems change when they stop serving the people within them, and the consequences when a system breaks down. Key concepts of function, causation, and responsibility give students the analytical vocabulary to move between examples, a classroom job rotation the students themselves invent, a local civic system they research, a historical system they encounter in a text, without the unit ever needing to announce which subject is currently "in session." A teaching team that can articulate this structure clearly, and can point to student work that demonstrates students using these concepts rather than just encountering them, has something a verification team can engage with seriously. A team that can only produce a polished planner document without being able to speak fluently about why these particular lines of inquiry were chosen over others has a documentation exercise, not yet a practice.

Assessment Has to Follow the Same Transdisciplinary Logic

One further complication trips up candidate schools that have otherwise built a defensible Programme of Inquiry: assessment practices that quietly revert to subject-siloed thinking even when the unit itself is genuinely transdisciplinary. It is entirely possible to plan a strong cross-disciplinary unit and then assess it with a mathematics worksheet, a separate reading comprehension quiz, and an art rubric, three disconnected assessment instruments bolted onto a unit that was never meant to be evaluated piece by piece. The Programme Standards and Practices expect planning to address assessment issues throughout the planning process, not as an afterthought once the unit's content has been decided, and this means assessment tasks should ask students to demonstrate the same integrated thinking the unit was designed to build.

A genuinely aligned assessment for the How We Organize Ourselves unit described above might ask students to design and justify a new system for an authentic context, the classroom, the school, a community space they have researched, requiring them to apply causation and responsibility as analytical tools rather than simply recall facts about systems they were taught. This is also where ongoing, formative assessment matters more than candidate schools often anticipate. The IB's emphasis on integrated, ongoing assessment throughout a unit, rather than a single summative task at the end, means teachers need real fluency in reading evidence of conceptual understanding in the moment, during a discussion, in a student's reflection journal, in the way a child revises their thinking after new information arrives. This is a skill that develops with practice across a trial year and rarely arrives fully formed on day one, which is one more reason the trial year needs to be treated as genuine implementation rather than a rehearsal to survive.

Why This Is the Place Authorization Timelines Most Often Slip

If you have read our earlier piece on the PYP trial year, you already know that collaborative planning and reflection is the area where verification teams most often find gaps between what a school's documentation claims and what its classrooms actually demonstrate. The transdisciplinary themes and the Programme of Inquiry are where that gap becomes visible first, because the POI is the single document where a school's entire approach to inquiry-based, cross-disciplinary learning is laid bare for inspection. A school can have warm, capable teachers and a coordinator who genuinely understands inquiry pedagogy and still produce a POI that reads as compliant rather than coherent, because building genuine transdisciplinary coherence across an entire school takes the kind of sustained, structured collaborative time that many candidate schools underestimate when they are sequencing their trial year.

The schools that move through this stage of authorization without losing time are the ones that treat POI development as a standing collaborative practice from the very start of candidacy, not a document to finalize once and submit. They build in protected timetabled time for cross-grade planning conversations specifically about thematic balance and conceptual progression, not just within-grade planning for individual units. They assign a coordinator with enough instructional credibility that teachers treat these conversations as genuine professional dialogue rather than a compliance exercise to get through. And they build directly against the current theme descriptors from day one, so that the POI they present at their verification visit is the POI they intend to keep using, not one already scheduled for revision.

None of this is complicated in concept. All of it is genuinely difficult to execute well without having seen, from the inside, what a verification team is actually checking for when they read a Programme of Inquiry and sit in a classroom built on top of it. That is the gap between schools that move through PYP authorization on schedule and schools that arrive at their verification visit with a beautifully formatted document that does not yet reflect how their teachers actually think.
