The PYP Exhibition: Why Schools That Plan for It From Day One Build Stronger Programmes, Not Just Better Events

What is the PYP Exhibition? 

The Exhibition is the culminating experience of the Primary Years Programme, required of all students in their final year of PYP, typically Grade 5 at ages ten to twelve. It is a collaborative, student-initiated, transdisciplinary inquiry in which students identify and investigate a real-world issue or opportunity of genuine significance, connect their investigation to one or more transdisciplinary themes, and share their learning with the broader school community. The Exhibition is not a presentation event bolted onto the end of the PYP year. It is the moment in which a school's entire Programme of Inquiry, its approach to inquiry pedagogy, its assessment culture, and its commitment to student agency are made visible in a single culminating experience.

What the Exhibition Is Actually Assessing

The IBO's guidelines are specific about the Exhibition's purposes, and understanding them at a granular level changes how a school plans for it. The Exhibition is designed to assess the degree to which students have genuinely synthesised the essential elements of the PYP over the course of their primary years, not whether they can recall what those elements are, but whether they have developed the capacity to draw on them independently in service of an inquiry they have ownership over.

This means the Exhibition is simultaneously a student assessment tool and an institutional assessment tool. A school's Exhibition process and documentation are proof of the overall quality of the school's program. Where did the central idea for the Exhibition come from, and how much genuine student agency shaped that choice? How did teachers function during the Exhibition, as facilitators of a student-led inquiry or as managers of a school event? What does the student documentation show about the depth of the inquiry process, and where does it reveal gaps in how the programme built inquiry skills across the preceding years? How did the school community, including parents, mentors from outside the school, and students across year levels, participate in the Exhibition in meaningful rather than ceremonial ways?

The answers to these questions are not generated in the weeks leading up to the Exhibition. They are generated across the entire PYP, in the quality of the units that preceded the final year, in the professional development of the teachers who facilitated them, and in the assessment culture the school built around ongoing, formative inquiry rather than periodic summative testing.

Student Agency: The Most Misunderstood Element

The IB's framework is explicit that the Exhibition must be student-initiated, student-designed, and collaborative. In practice, the degree to which schools genuinely honor this requirement varies considerably, and the variation is visible to an experienced evaluator in the documentation and in the conversations they have with students during a verification visit.

A student-initiated Exhibition begins with students having genuine input into the issue or opportunity they will investigate. This does not mean a free-for-all without teacher guidance. It means a structured process through which students, supported by their teachers, develop their own questions about the world and gradually narrow toward a central idea that has sufficient scope and significance to sustain a serious collaborative inquiry. The central idea selected must warrant detailed investigation by an entire student cohort, which means it needs to be genuinely substantial, connecting to real-world complexity rather than to a topic that can be exhausted in a week's research.

The difference between genuine student agency and teacher-managed compliance shows up most clearly in the documentation. In a genuinely student-led process, the Exhibition journal, the ongoing record each student keeps of their inquiry, shows real intellectual development over time: early questions that are broad and poorly defined, evidence of research that complicated initial assumptions, shifts in thinking prompted by what students discovered rather than what they were told. It shows disagreement between students, negotiation, revision. In a managed process, the journals tend to look remarkably similar across students, follow a predictable linear progression, and show the influence of a teacher who was too involved in shaping what students wrote rather than in facilitating the thinking that generates genuine inquiry documentation.

This is the specific distinction an experienced evaluator is looking for when they sit with a student cohort and ask them about their Exhibition. They are not checking whether students can summarize their research findings. They are checking whether students can explain how their thinking changed during the process, what they thought at the beginning, what they discovered that surprised them, how that changed their direction. A student who can answer that question fluently has been through a genuine inquiry. A student who can only describe what their project covered has been through a managed activity.

The Mentor Role and What It Requires of a School

Every student or group of students in the Exhibition works with a mentor, an adult from the school community who supports their inquiry process without directing it. The mentor might be a teacher from a different grade level, a parent with relevant expertise, a community member whose professional experience connects to the inquiry the students are pursuing. The mentor's role is to ask questions that deepen the students' thinking, to challenge assumptions, to help students identify what they don't yet know and how they might find out, not to provide answers, correct the direction of the inquiry, or shape the documentation toward a result the mentor considers more impressive.

Getting the mentor role right requires preparation that most schools underestimate. An untrained mentor who brings strong content expertise and the best intentions will almost inevitably drift toward teaching mode, explaining, correcting, and directing, rather than the facilitative questioning mode the Exhibition requires. The result is an Exhibition that looks impressive in its final presentation but that doesn't hold up to a conversation with the students about how they got there, because the intellectual journey was partly someone else's rather than wholly their own.

Building a mentor preparation programme, even a relatively simple one involving a focused session on questioning techniques and the distinction between facilitation and instruction, makes a measurable difference in Exhibition quality. It also makes a measurable difference in parent engagement, because parents who are given a genuine role in the Exhibition as prepared mentors rather than passive audience members develop a much deeper understanding of what the PYP's inquiry approach actually produces in their children.

The Exhibition as a Planning Anchor for Authorization

Here is the specific planning insight that distinguishes schools that sail through PYP authorization from those that arrive at the verification visit with an Exhibition they are hoping rather than confident will hold up.

The Exhibition makes visible the quality of the Programme of Inquiry that preceded it. A student cohort whose Exhibition shows genuine transdisciplinary thinking, whose inquiry naturally draws on mathematics to analyze data, on language arts to communicate findings, on science to design investigations, on social studies to understand context, got there because the units of inquiry across their PYP years actually built those capacities. The Exhibition is the culmination of those units. Its quality cannot exceed the quality of the programme that produced it.

This means that from the first month of candidacy, the school's curriculum planning decisions should be held against the question: is this building the skills, habits of mind, and inquiry dispositions that Grade 5 students will need to conduct a genuinely transdisciplinary, student-led Exhibition? Is this unit of inquiry building students' capacity to frame real questions, to identify what they don't know, to select and use appropriate research strategies, to synthesise findings across disciplinary perspectives? If the answer is no, if units are functioning as themed content delivery rather than genuine inquiry, the Exhibition at the end of the trial year will reflect that, and the verification team will see it.

The Exhibition can be structured in two ways. It may function as one of the six units of inquiry in the final PYP year, under one of the transdisciplinary themes, or it may stand outside the Programme of Inquiry entirely to explore a global issue that crosses multiple themes. The second option is more demanding in terms of student agency and transdisciplinary scope, but it is also more powerful as a demonstration of genuine programme quality, because a student cohort that can move from a global issue of their own identification to a rich, multi-perspective inquiry without the scaffolding of a single theme framework is demonstrating something that goes beyond programme compliance into genuine programme quality.

Documentation: Where Schools Most Often Come Up Short

The Exhibition requires schools to maintain and present specific documentation: the central idea and lines of inquiry developed through the student-led process, the Exhibition journals showing each student's ongoing inquiry process, evidence of the transdisciplinary connections the inquiry built, records of mentor interactions, and the school's own assessment records showing how teacher observations of the Exhibition process were documented against PYP assessment criteria.

Documentation failures in the Exhibition fall into two consistent patterns. The first is quantity without quality: voluminous records that show students completed the Exhibition process without showing what they learned or how their thinking developed. The second is retrospective documentation: journals and records that were organized or finalized after the inquiry was complete rather than maintained throughout it, which produces a coherence in the documentation that genuine real-time inquiry rarely has.

Both patterns are legible to an evaluator who has read Exhibition documentation from schools at different levels of programme maturity. The tell in the first pattern is that the documentation is comprehensive but undifferentiated, every student's journal covers the same ground in much the same way. The tell in the second pattern is that the documentation is too coherent, it follows a narrative arc that would be unlikely to emerge from a live inquiry process where thinking genuinely evolved in response to what students discovered.

Building good Exhibition documentation culture requires the same thing that building a good Programme of Inquiry requires: structured collaborative planning time for teachers, explicit professional development around what formative assessment in an inquiry context looks like, and a school culture that treats honest, imperfect evidence of genuine student thinking as more valuable than polished records of managed student performance.
