Concept-Based Learning in the MYP: What It Actually Means to Teach Through Key Concepts Rather Than Around Them

What is concept-based learning in the IB Middle Years Programme?
The MYP is built on the premise that genuine understanding is not the accumulation of facts but the development of transferable ideas, what the IB calls concepts, that allow students to make sense of new situations, connect knowledge across subjects, and think at a level that persists long after the specific content of a unit has been forgotten. The programme prescribes sixteen key concepts, among them change, systems, relationships, perspective, creativity, and identity, that serve as organizing lenses across all eight subject groups. Every MYP unit is built around one of these key concepts, supported by related concepts that are subject-specific, and situated within one of six global contexts that connect the learning to a real-world frame of reference. The result, when it works as designed, is a curriculum in which students are not merely acquiring knowledge about the world but developing the intellectual architecture to understand it.
That is the framework. What happens inside it is the harder question, and the one that determines whether a school's MYP delivers on its considerable promise or produces beautifully formatted unit planners that describe a kind of teaching that is not yet fully happening in the classrooms beneath them.

The Gap Between Labelling Concepts and Teaching Through Them
There is a version of concept-based practice that is almost universal in MYP schools and almost entirely cosmetic. A teacher selects the key concept of change for a unit on the French Revolution. They write a statement of inquiry that connects change to the global context of fairness and development. They design three guiding inquiry questions. The unit planner looks precisely as the IBO's framework requires. And then the teacher teaches the French Revolution in exactly the way they would have taught it before the MYP arrived: chronologically, content-first, with the concept of change appearing briefly in the introduction, surfacing again in a discussion question midway through, and being referenced once more in the summative assessment prompt.
The concept, in this version, is furniture. It decorates the unit without structuring it. The students encounter the French Revolution as a collection of events, causes, and consequences, which they are expected to understand and recall. They do not encounter change as an analytical tool they are learning to use with increasing sophistication across the five years of the programme, applied here to a historical case and connected elsewhere to a mathematical pattern, a scientific process, a literary character arc.
The distinction between these two versions of the same unit is not visible in the documentation. It is entirely visible in the classroom, in the questions the teacher asks, in the tasks students are given, in what the summative assessment actually requires students to do. A teacher who is genuinely teaching through the concept of change designs a unit in which the central intellectual work is making sense of what change is, how it operates, what it produces, under what conditions it accelerates or reverses — using the French Revolution as the case through which those questions become concrete and answerable. A teacher who is teaching around the concept designs a unit in which the French Revolution is the content and change is the label applied to it.
What the Statement of Inquiry Is Actually For
The statement of inquiry is the most consistently misunderstood planning element in the MYP, and the quality of a school's statements of inquiry is probably the single most reliable indicator of how deeply the concept-based framework has actually been understood by the teaching staff.
The statement of inquiry is meant to be a conceptual claim, a proposition about how the key concept, filtered through the related concepts, plays out in the context the global frame provides. It is not a description of what the unit covers. It is not a learning objective restated as a sentence. It is a generalization significant enough to be worth interrogating, specific enough to generate genuine inquiry, and transferable enough that a student who understands it deeply can apply it beyond the unit that produced it.
Consider the difference between these two statements of inquiry for a mathematics unit on linear relationships:
"Students will explore how linear relationships can be represented in different ways."
"The way we represent relationships determines what we can understand about them."
The first describes an activity. The second makes a claim about the nature of mathematical representation that a student who genuinely understands it will carry into a physics class, a geography unit, a data literacy discussion, and every subsequent mathematics course they take. It invites disagreement, testing, and refinement rather than passive acquisition. It is, in the genuine sense, an inquiry starting point rather than a content summary.
Writing statements of inquiry at this level of conceptual weight is a skill that takes time to develop, and it is one of the clearest indicators of where a school's teaching staff currently sits on the journey toward genuine concept-based practice. A professional development session focused exclusively on this element, where teachers bring existing statements and examine them honestly against this standard, often produces more genuine curriculum improvement than a full day of general MYP training.
Global Contexts as Planning Lenses, Not Decorative Frames
The six global contexts, identities and relationships, orientation in space and time, personal and cultural expression, scientific and technical innovation, globalization and sustainability, and fairness and development, provide the real-world situating framework that gives a unit its authentic relevance and its connection to the world beyond the classroom.
They are also the element most frequently treated as a bureaucratic requirement rather than a genuine planning tool. A teacher who selects globalization and sustainability for a unit on ecosystems because it seems like the most obvious fit, without asking what specific aspect of that context will genuinely shape the inquiry, has not used the global context. They have assigned it.
A teacher who uses globalization and sustainability as a genuine lens asks: what about the way globalization operates, or the specific tensions around sustainability, will make the inquiry into ecosystems richer, more contested, more connected to questions students can pursue beyond the science classroom? That question changes what the unit investigates, which case studies it uses, which student experiences it draws on, and what the assessment asks students to demonstrate. The global context, used properly, is not a thematic label. It is an epistemological choice about where in the world the concept under investigation becomes most productively visible.
The Enhanced MYP, currently in Beta development with a full publication expected in 2027, is refining how global contexts function in unit planning, moving toward greater flexibility in how teachers build the contextual lens around learning, including the option to frame inquiry through inquiry questions rather than requiring a statement that integrates all three elements. Schools currently in MYP implementation or candidacy should be aware of these developments, since the enhanced framework will affect unit planning architecture. The core principle, that concepts and real-world contexts together generate the kind of learning that transfers, is unchanged.
How Concept-Based Teaching Changes the Classroom in Practice
The clearest way to understand what concept-based teaching looks like in practice is to examine the questions a teacher asks, because the quality and direction of teacher questioning is where the conceptual framework either comes alive or remains on paper.
In a content-focused classroom, questions tend to check understanding of specific information. What were the causes of the French Revolution? What is the formula for a linear equation? What are the characteristics of a dystopian novel? These are legitimate questions for assessing whether students have acquired the content the unit covered. They are not questions that develop conceptual thinking.
In a concept-based classroom, questions reach upward toward the generalization the unit is building. In what ways does this revolution fit the pattern of change we examined in the scientific revolution, and in what ways does it challenge that pattern? If we change the way we represent this relationship, what can we now see that was invisible before, and what becomes harder to see? How does the dystopian world this author built reflect a specific understanding of what systems do to individuals, and where do you see that understanding being contested by other characters in the text?
These questions require students to do something fundamentally different from recalling or applying specific content. They require students to use the concept as a thinking tool, to move between the specific case in front of them and the generalization they are building, and to remain genuinely uncertain long enough to think carefully rather than retreating to the nearest correct answer. That productive uncertainty is the environment in which genuine conceptual understanding develops, and it is an environment that does not arise spontaneously. It is designed, deliberately, by a teacher who understands what they are trying to build and has planned the unit in a way that creates the conditions for it.
The Transfer Question: How to Know If It Is Actually Working
The IBO's framework describes the goal of concept-based learning in terms of transfer: the capacity to take understanding developed in one context and apply it meaningfully in another. This is also the most reliable way to assess whether concept-based teaching is genuinely happening or being simulated.
A student who has been taught through the concept of change rather than around it can, when presented with an unfamiliar case in a different subject area, apply their understanding of how change operates, what conditions accelerate it, what forms of resistance it encounters, what it produces at different scales to make genuine analytical headway with the new material. They are not simply pattern-matching to a remembered example. They are using change as an analytical lens, the way a historian uses periodization or a scientist uses a theoretical model: as a tool that makes the unfamiliar intelligible.
The summative assessment is where this either shows or it doesn't. A summative task that asks students to analyze a specific historical event using the concept of change and demonstrate how their understanding applies to a different context the unit did not cover is a transfer task. A summative task that asks students to describe the causes and consequences of the French Revolution is a content recall task, regardless of how many references to the concept of change appear in the unit that preceded it.
Most MYP schools are somewhere between these two poles, and most are further from genuine transfer assessment than their unit planners suggest. Closing that gap is the curriculum leadership work that distinguishes schools building genuine MYP quality from schools building MYP compliance, and it is the work that pays the largest dividends in student outcomes — not just in the MYP itself but in the DP that follows, where the capacity to think across disciplines, to use concepts analytically rather than decoratively, is precisely what Theory of Knowledge demands and what Extended Essay supervisors find most consistently underdeveloped in first-year DP students.
What School Leaders Need to Build for This to Work
Concept-based teaching at the level described here does not arrive in a school through a policy decision or a professional development day. It develops through sustained, structured collaborative planning time in which teachers examine actual student work, interrogate actual unit planners, and hold honest professional conversations about whether what they are planning and delivering is producing the understanding they intend.
The MYP coordinator's role in this is central. A coordinator who can sit with a humanities teacher whose statement of inquiry is descriptive rather than conceptual and help them rewrite it not by correcting their language but by asking the questions that clarify what the unit is actually trying to build is doing something qualitatively different from a coordinator who manages compliance documentation and communicates IBO deadlines. That level of instructional coaching requires the coordinator to have a deep understanding of concept-based pedagogy across subject groups, a working knowledge of what strong and weak unit planners look like in practice, and enough professional credibility with the teaching staff that their input is experienced as genuine collegial support rather than oversight.
Building that coordinator capacity is one of the most significant investments a school can make in genuine MYP quality. It is also one of the least visible from the outside and one of the most consequential for what students actually experience on the inside.
